Our History

The history of the Southport Library begins prior to 1906 when Susan and Rebecca Zabriskie moved to Newagen from New York. They had a large collection of books, many of them inherited from their father, a pastor of the Dutch Reform Church. Since there was no library on Southport, they decided to lend their collection out to the neighborhood.

At first the books were loaned from the ladies’ cottage on Bayberry Lane. In 1906, the books were moved into a small building on the (Newagen) Town Landing Road which was called “The Bayberry Camp Library”.

A word from our Patrons...

“Historic white clapboard building housing the quintessential simple coastal library.

When we visited, they were having a book sale and even giving some away.

Wonderful place and well worth a visit."

WORTH STOPPING IN

WONDERFUL LOCAL LIBRARY

"Four of us stopped by this outstanding little library at the southern end of Southport Island and are so glad we did. They had a wonderful art exhibit accompanied by many quotes from Rachel Carson's books. Their collection of her books and books about her was very impressive. This is especially appropriate because she wrote Silent Spring while staying on Southport Island!"

BEAMING WITH LOCAL FLAVOR

"First to greet you is a magnificent garden overflowing with beautiful flowers and charm. This simply charming library was once a one room school house. Local artisan’s lovely paintings and quilts adorn the walls. It’s home to a large butterfly collection and of course reading and video materials. Books are offered for sale on the second floor."
